Dr Kanatiwela has attained her bachelors and PhD in Microbiology from the University of Peradeniya Sri Lanka.

She has over 5 years’ experience in the education sector and over 5 years of experience in the professional field. She also has over 10 years’ experience in research in the area of mycology.  She holds the patent (Pongamia pinnata) cream for the control of superficial infections caused by Candida albicans, Candida sake, Candida guilliermondii, Candida dubliniensis and Pichia ohmeri.
